Participating Artists Information

Participating Artists Information

• Selected artists will be invited to provide a small black and white line drawing. It should be based on content referring to their own practice but with an understanding of the We Are A Grand River’s intentions.

• The drawing image will be digitized and a mold made. A relief sculpture will be cast from the mold.

• Casts are to be installed in cement walkways or on walls in public sites to appear as part of a meandering stream. Each installation will be unique, with intentions to contribute to:

  • Reflection on the Grand River
  • Animate, enhance and add interest to public space
  • Offer an original destination to discover and explore
  • Provide a vehicle for local artistic expression
  • Encourage the activity of walking
  • Build a stronger sense of river-long community identity
  • Establish a sense of global connection

• Initially three casts of each mold will be made:

One for the participating local municipality,
One as part of an exchange project with another country,
One for exhibition at interested public galleries.

Artwork Specifications:

1. Artist’s drawing must be in black on a white background and confined within a five-inch circle (to be confirmed – works ranging from 3 to 10 inches). The circle edge must be black (raised) so that it protects cement from spilling inside.
2. The black area will be positive and will rise about 1/16 of an inch from the bronze base.
3. The works will be sand-cast in bronze and inlayed into cement or other materials.
4. The casting process works with a wide variety of line widths but the lines should be clean and have enough space between them to ensure that they do not fill in during the casting process.
5. Sample images are below (also see under images - project.)
6. Attached are sample circle templates for drawing.
7. Start-up date is to be announced
8. Email, deliver or mail to:
